The invention relates to a method for producing 1,6-hexanediol and 6- hydroxycaproic acid or their esters by the catalytic hydrogenation of adipic acid, adipic acid monoesters or adipic acid diesters or educt flows containing adipic acid or its esters as essential constituents. The bottom product obtained when the hydrogenation discharge is distilled after the hexanediol and the hydroxycaproic acid or its esters have been separated off is reintroduced into the hydrogenation process, said bottom product essentially containing oligomeric esters of the 6-hydroxycaproic acid. The resulting mixture of the educt and the return flow is reacted at temperatures of 100 to 300 °C and at pressures of 10 to 300 bar in the liquid phase and with a molar ratio of carboxyl groups to be hydrogenated to hydrogen in the reactor of 1:5 to 1:100, on hydrogenating catalysts.

Procédé de production de 1,6 hexanediol et d'acide 6-hydroxycaproïque ou de ses esters par hydrogénation catalytique d'acide adipique, de monoesters d'acide adipique ou de diesters d'acide adipique ou de flux d'éduits qui contiennent de l'acide adipique ou ses esters comme constituants principaux. Selon l'invention, on réachemine à l'étage d'hydrogénation le produit de queue qui a été obtenu lors de la distillation du produit d'hydrogénation après séparation de l'hexanediol et de l'acide hydroxycaproïque ou de ses esters et qui contient principalement des esters oligomères de l'acide 6-hydroxycaproïque. On fait ensuite réagir sur des catalyseurs d'hydrogénation le mélange ainsi obtenu, constitué de l'éduit et du flux réacheminé, à des températures comprises entre 100 et 300 DEG C, à des pressions comprises entre 10 et 300 bars dans la phase liquide et avec un rapport molaire entre les groupes carboxyle à hydrogéner et l'hydrogène dans le réacteur compris entre 1:5 et 1:100.
