A method is described for producing an aqueous thickener dispersion from a monomer composition made of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and at least one ethylenically unsaturated hydrophobic monomer, (i) an at least partially polymerized pre-emulsion being produced from to 80 wt.-% of said monomer composition, and (ii) the residual quantity of said monomer composition being added completely to the at least partially polymerized pre-emulsion and initiating a radical polymerization. The monomer composition preferably also comprises an associative monomer. The method avoids disadvantages of batch polymerization, such as inadequate batch-to-batch reproducibility and safety problems.

L'invention concerne un procédé de fabrication d'une dispersion aqueuse d'épaississant à partir d'une composition monomère constituée d'au moins un acide carboxylique éthylèniquement insaturé et d'au moins un monomère hydrophobe éthylèniquement insaturé, selon lequel : (i) avec 10 à 80 % en poids de la composition monomère, on prépare une préémulsion au moins partiellement polymérisée ; et (ii) on ajoute la totalité de la quantité résiduelle de la composition monomère à la préémulsion au moins partiellement polymérisée, et on déclenche une polymérisation radicalaire. De préférence, la composition monomère contient également un monomère associatif. Le procédé évite les inconvénients d'une polymérisation par charges, tels une reproductibilité insuffisante d'une charge à l'autre et des problèmes de sécurité.
