2104453 9312873 PCTABS00024 A molten asphalt binder (8) and an aqueous phase (9) are fed together into an emulsifying chamber (1), e.g. a dynamic mixer with a stator and a rotor, via the inlet (6) thereof, and fed through a series of shearing zones (28-33), whereafter the resulting emulsion is removed via the chamber outlet (10). Each shearing zone comprises at least one circular groove (30) which is formed in one surface (21) of a stator element (16) and engaged by projections (39) rigidly connected to a related rotor disc (48) which is rotated at a peripheral speed of 4-18 m/s by a shaft (25) driven by a motor (26). The resulting emulsion may be used to produce pavements including road pavements, surfacings and sealings.
