An optical cable for telecommunications comprises an optical core and a plurality of protecting and reinforcing elements or layers placed around the optical core, the optical core comprising, in turn, a central reinforcing element, a polymer layer, a plurality of optical fibres incorporated in the polymer layer and a thin sheath which covers the polymer layer, the optical fibres having an alternating spin about their own axes with a maximum value of at least 4 twists per metre, and comprising a core having a mean ellipticity in the range from 0.25 to 0.55, in such a way that the effects of birefringence of the fibres caused by the cabling process are significantly reduced.
Cette invention concerne un câble optique (1) pour télécommunications qui comprend une âme optique (2) et une pluralité d'éléments ou de couches de protection et de renfort (7, 11 and 13) disposés autour de l'âme optique (2). Cette âme optique (2) comprend elle-même un élément central de renforcement (4), une couche polymère (5) renfermant une pluralité de fibres optiques (3) et une mince gaine (6) qui recouvre la couche polymère (5). Ces fibres optiques sont vrillées alternativement sur leur propre axe, avec une valeur maximum de quatre torsions par mètre, et comprennent une âme (12) dont l'éllipticité moyenne est comprise entre 0,25 et 0,55, de sorte que les effets de la biréfringence des fibres provoquées par le procédé de fabrication du câble se trouvent sensiblement réduits.
