ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-bis-(bromoethyl)-tetrachlorobenzenes of the following formula: Image wherein the six substituents X represent together at all times four chlorine atoms and two CH2Br radicals, are prepared by reacting 1,2-, 1,3- or 1,4-bis-(chloromethyl)-tetrachlorobenzene with a bromide of an element of group 1 to group 3 inclusive of the periodic system, in a solvent and at a temperature of from 20 and 180°C. Use is made of solvents which dissolve the bis-(chloromethyl)-tetrachlorobenzene, but in which the resulting bis-(bromomethyl)-tetrachlorobenzene is substantially insoluble, such solvents being alcohols, ethers and ketones. These bis- (bromomethyl)-tetrachlorobenzenes have been found to possess very good fireproofing properties and are advatageously employed with polycondensation and polyaddition products, and polymerization products of unsaturated aliphatic monomers or co-polymess of at least one aliphatic monomer, to form fireproof polymeric compositions.
