ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A heavy hydrocarbonaceous oil is mixed with a first component selected from an alkali metal compound and an alkaline earth metal compound and a second component comprising a cellulose-containing or cellulose-derived substance and the resulting mixture is coked. The coke may then be gasified in the presence of steam.
