Abstract of the Disclosure A method for producing dry C1-C4 alkyl halides. The method is characterized by reacting the corresponding alkanol with a 10% excess of hydrogen halide at elevated temperature and pressure, where the major portion of the water produced is in the liquid phase; the gaseous alkyl halide-hydrogen halide reaction product is contacted with alkyl halide-hydrogen halide liquid reflux, thereby drying the reaction product, and the alkyl halide is separated from the hydrogen halide. The process avoids the use of sulfuric acid for drying, and results in the formation of only very small amounts of by-product dialkyl ether.
