Abstract of the Disclosure In a method for producing carbon steel or alloy steel by an electric steel-making procedure comprising the steps of charging a steel scrap into an electric furnace, melting the scrap, refining the melt and separating the molten steel from the slag, the improvement wherein before the completion of the oxidation stage in the refin- ing step, silicon carbide is charged into the furnace thereby decreasing the amounts of the constituent metals in the steel which will be oxidized and move to the slag.
