Abstract of the Disclosure The specification discloses a method for producing ethanol in a high concentration, e.g. 200 mg/ml, by using an immobilized microorganism which comprises the steps of contacting the immobilized cells of a microorganism of the genera of Saccharomyces or Zymomonas with a culture broth containing a fermentative sugar and other nutrients necessary for the growth of the microorganism; microbiologically converting the sugar into ethanol; adding an additional fresh culture broth containing the sugar to the conversion reaction system; if required, intermittently or continuously repeating the addition of a broth containing the sugar; and then separating the broth containing ethanol produced. This method avoids the disad- vantage of prior art processes, such as low concentrations of ethanol and immobilization of the microorganism by high concentrations of the fermentative sugar.
