ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for producing ethane and ethylene by oxidizing methane with oxygen at a temperature of 600-900°C, in the presence of a catalyst comprising lead (II) oxide, distributed over a carrier, the car- rier consisting of pumice stone, silicon carbide, zinc oxide, zirconium dioxide or oxides of alkaline earth elements, or lead oxide in admixture with manganese (II) oxide, distributed over a carrier consisting of pumice stone, silicon carbide, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, zinc oxide or oxides of alkaline earth elements; or lead oxide with- out carrier, in admixture with sodium silicate alone or together with silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, manganese (II) oxide, zinc oxide or oxides of alkaline earth elements; ethane and ethylene are obtained by this method in high selectivity with high catalyst activity.
