ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE . In a method for producing fatty acid esters by reacting olefins, alkanols, and carbon monoxide in the presence of a cobalt containing catalyst and an activator consisting of pyridine, a non-ortho-substituted alkyl-pyridine, or mixtures thereof, the improvement comprising separating the reaction discharge carefully, after treatment with an oxygen containing gas, in two distilling stages, the first of which operates at a higher pressure than the second, into a cobalt free distillate and a concentrate arising as a sump of the second distilling stage and containing all of the cobalt used as the catalyst, the cobalt containing concentrate being taken up in pyridine, a non-ortho-substituted alkyl-pyridine or mixtures thereof, the suspension thus obtained being treated with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, at a temperature of between 100 and 250°C and a pressure of at least 50 bars, and the product of the treatment being returned to the fatty acid ester synthesis.
