The invention relates to a method for producing L(-)-carnitine. The aim of the invention is to depict a method which permits the synthesis of L(-)-carnitine from crotonobetaine, crotonobetaine salts or derivatives in an ecologically advantageous manner by immobilizing cells of Escherichia coli 044 K74 in a continuously operating cell recycle reactor. Growing or resting cells of E. coli are retained in a continuously operating cell recycle reactor by micro or ultrafiltration membranes which are arranged as a flat membrane module or hollow chamfer module.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de produire de la L(-)-carnitine. L'essence de l'invention réside dans la création d'un procédé permettant de réaliser, d'une façon avantageuse sur le plan économique, la synthèse de L(-)-carnitine à partir de crotonobétaïne, de sels ou de dérivés de crotonobétaïne, au moyen de cellules immobilisées d'Escherichia coli 044 K74 dans un réacteur à recyclage des cellules fonctionnant en continu. Des cellules en développement ou au repos de E. coli sont retenues, dans un réacteur à recyclage des cellules fonctionnant en continu, par des membranes de microfiltration ou d'ultrafiltration qui sont agencées pour former un module à membranes planes ou à fibres creuses.
