This invention relates to a process for the preparation of N-phosphonomethylglycine and its salts. More particularly, this invention is directed to a method for preparing N-phosphonomethylglycine involving the reaction of aminomethylphosphonic acid AMPA, an alkali metal or hydrogen cyanide, and formaldehyde and hydrolyzing the product of that reaction to form N-phosphonomethylglycine and its salts.
