ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a method for producing a polyarylene sulfide comprising contacting a dihaloge- nated aromatic compound with an alkali metal sulfide in a polar solvent, wherein a halogenated aromatic compound containing active hydrogen is present in the reaction system. The method of the invention enables one to obtain a high molecular weight polymer by a simple polycondensation reaction without needing heat treatment of a polyarylene sulfide of a low molecular weight to cure it.
