ABSTRACT A powder forged component consisting of two separate parts is obtained by pressing to final shape a one piece powder preform, followed by sintering, forging, cooling and separation into individual parts. According to the invention, prior to sintering and at the point of separation between the individual parts, the preform is povided with an incipient notch which, between sintering and forging, is given a protective coating, more particularly a layer of oxide. When forging the preform to final shape, the notch is closed, whereupon the component is cooled and is then separated by fracture into its individual parts. The method according to the invention may be used, for example, for producing a connecting rod having a divided big end and, after the rod has been cooled, the holes for the connecting rod bolts are prepared in the big end, and the connecting rod bolts and nuts are assembled loosely in the holes, after which the parting surface in the big end joint is produced. This considerably simplifies the process and at the same time enables to give more accurately fitting individual parts.
