ABSTRACT An improved process is disclosed for preparing sodium bicarbonate and hydrogen chloride by reacting aqueous sodium chloride solution with carbon dioxide in the presence of a tertiary amine and an organic solvent. The process comprises (1) introducing carbon dioxide into 3 mixture comprising (a) an aqueous sodium chloride solution, (b) a tertiary amine and (c) a polar organic solvent; (2) separating the resulting aqueous and organic phases; (3) freeing the aqueous phase from sodium bicarbonate and returning the aqueous phase to step (1) after concentration with sodium chloride; (4) removing water from the organic phase(s) of the polar organic solvent; and (5) heating the residue containing a non-polar solvent to drive off the hydrogen chloride.
