ABSTRACT An improved process for preparing sodium bicarbonate and hydrogen chloride is disclosed by reacting an aqueous sodium chloride solution with carbon dioxide, which process comprises (1) introducing carbon dioxide under pressure into a mixture containing (a) an aqueous sodium chloride solution; (b) a tertiary amine; and (c) a non-polar solvent; (2) separating the result- ing aqueous and organic phases; (3) freeing the aqueous phase from precipitated sodium bicarbonate and returning the aqueous phase after concentration with sodium carbonate to step (1); and (4) heating the organic phase to release the hydrogen chloride.
