The invention relates to a method for sulfonating aromatic polymers in a gentle manner. The inventive method comprises the following steps: a) dissolving the aromatic polymer in a substantially water-free acid selected from the group consisting of concentrated sulfuric acid, chlorosulfuric acid or oleum, b) adding an organic solvent that is inert under the reaction conditions, c) adding an anhydride of a carboxylic acid, d) adding a sulfonating agent, and e) carrying out the sulfonation at a temperature below 25 ~C and for a period sufficient to obtain the desired degree of sulfonation. The homogeneous process products obtained can be preferably used in the production of membranes, for example for fuel cell applications.
L'invention concerne un nouveau procédé non agressif de sulfonation de polymères aromatiques. Le procédé comporte les étapes suivantes: a) dissolution du polymère aromatique dans un acide pratiquement anhydre choisi dans le groupe comprenant l'acide sulfurique concentré, l'acide chlorosulfonique et l'oléum, b) addition d'un solvant organique inerte dans des conditions de réaction, c) addition d'un anhydride d'un acide carbonique, d) addition d'un agent de sulfonation et e) réalisation de la sulfonation à une température inférieure à 25 ·C et pendant une durée suffisante pour obtenir le niveau de sulfonation souhaité. Les produits homogènes ainsi obtenus peuvent être affectés de préférence à la fabrication de membranes utilisées, par exemple, dans des piles à combustible.
