The invention relates to a novel method for producing (1.alpha., 2 .beta., 4 .beta., 5.alpha., 7 .beta.)-7-[(hydroxydi-2- thienylacetyl)oxy]-9,9-dimethyl-3-oxa-9- azoniatricyclo[3.3.1.02,4-]nonane bromide. In the method, tiotropium bromide of formula (I) SEE FORMULA I is obtained through a reaction of tropenol of formula (V) SEE FORMULA V with di-(2-thienyl)-glycolic acid derivatives of formula (VI) SEE FORMULA VI to form a tropenol ester of formula (VII) SEE FORMULA VII which is converted to a scopine ester of formula (IV) SEE FORMULA IV by epoxidation, with the subsequent quaternisation of the scopine ester with methyl bromide to produce the tiotropium bromide of formula (I).
