A method for producing uranium oxide includes combining uranium tetrafluoride and a solid oxidizing agent having a lower thermodynamic stability than the uranium oxide; heating the combination below the vapor point of the uranium tetrafluoride to sufficiently react the uranium tetrafluoride and the oxidizing agent to produce uranium oxide and a non-radioactive fluorine compound; and removing the fluorine compound.

L'invention se rapporte à un procédé de production d'oxyde d'uranium consistant à combiner du tétrafluorure d'uranium et un agent d'oxydation solide doté d'une stabilité inférieure à celle de l'uranium; à chauffer la combinaison à une température inférieure au point de vaporisation du tétrafluorure d'uranium de façon à faire suffisamment réagir le tétrafluorure d'uranium et l'agent d'oxydation afin de produire l'oxyde d'uranium et un composé du fluor non radioactif; et à extraire ledit composé du fluor.
