A method for producing uranium oxide includes combining uranium tetrafluoride, silicon and a gaseous anhydrous oxidizing agent having a lower thermodynamic stability than any oxide ofuranium produced; heating the combination below the vapor point of the uranium tetrat]uoride to sufficiently react the uranium tetrafluoride, silicon and the oxidizing agent to produce uranium oxide and a non-radioactive fluorine compound; and removing the fluorine compound.

L'invention porte sur un procédé de production d'oxyde d'uranium, qui consiste à mélanger un tétrafluorure d'uranium, du silicium, et un comburant anhydre gazeux ayant une stabilité thermodynamique plus faible que pour n'importe quel oxyde d'uranium produit. Le procédé consiste ensuite à chauffer le mélange au-dessous du point vapeur du tétrafluorure d'uranium pour déclencher une réaction suffisante du tétrafluorure d'uranium, du silicium et du comburant en vue de produire un oxyde d'uranium et un composé du fluor non radioactif. Le procédé consiste enfin à retirer le composé du fluor.
