Abstract of the disclosure The invention relates to a method of producing a 1,3,2-dioxaphosphole of the formula [I]B Image [I] B wherein Image represents a benzene ring which may be substituted and R repre- sents an aryl, alkoxy or aralkyloxy group which may be substituted, which comprises reacting a catechol compound of the formula [II]B Image [II]B wherein Image is as defined above, with a compound of the formula [III]B Image [III]B wherein X is a halogen atom and R is as defined above, at a temperature not higher than about 30°C in the presence of a base. The compounds of formula [I]B are useful, for example, as neutral catalysts in deriving cephalosporin anti- biotics, which have important value in the treatment of bacterial diseases.
