Water permeable bags are filled up with sand and placed on the beach, at or near the water's edge, the bag being fabricated, preferably, from a water permeable non-rotting material such as woven plastic or synthetic strips or bands. These types of bags can be recycled from spent animal feed bags which are commonly available in the agricultural industry. Particularly suitable are spent feed bags, particularly from hogs, chickens or the like, that are commonly available through animal feed suppliers as recycled feed bags. Preferably, the bags are juxtaposed one against the other and placed with a longitudinal axis orthogonal to the water's edge and along the water's edge or at the water's edge. Bags may be placed on top of a lower row of bags so that an effective barrier is created that is about two bags in width high, or even more. Wave action during storm conditions having entrained sand from the water body overflows the bags and the velocity of the wave is slowed in behind the barrier and beach accretion occurs.
