A scheme for propagating, between views of a network, status information for elements of the network in a way that mirrors how the network is maintained. The propagation scheme divides the elements of the network into either connections or equipment, groups the elements in each of these two partitions into increasingly higher-level views and propagates status of fundamental and compound objects between the different views to help locate the source of any malfunction of the network. This status propagation scheme is particularly suited for monitoring a wide-area network, where there are more connections and more complex equipment than in a typical local area network, these connections are usually more geographically disbursed, and most importantly these connections are maintained by different people than those who maintain the other equipment of the network. By providing both a multi-level equipment hierarchy and a multi-level connection hierarchy, and providing both upward and sometimes downward propagation of status information between different views of the network, the present invention makes possible more rapid diagnostic of both connection and other equipment malfunction.
L'invention est une méthode de transmission, entre les vues d'un réseau, d'informations de situation sur les éléments de ce réseau qui reflètent la façon dont la maintenance est effectuée dans le réseau. La méthode de transmission de l'invention divise les éléments du réseau en connexions et en équipements, groupe les éléments de chacune de ces deux partitions dans des vues à niveaux ascendants et transmet les situations des objets fondamentaux et composés entre les différentes vues pour aider à localiser la source d'une défaillance dans le réseau. Cette méthode de transmission d'informations est particulièrement appropriée à la surveillance des réseaux longue distance où les connexions sont plus nombreuses et les équipements plus complexes que dans un réseau local type. Ces connexions sont généralement réparties sur une plus grande zone géographique et surtout, leur maintenance est effectuée par des préposés différents de ceux qui font la maintenance des équipements. En établissant une hiérarchie multiniveau pour les équipements et une hiérarchie multiniveau pour les connexions et en fournissant des transmissions d'informations de situation ascendantes et parfois descendantes entre les différentes vues du réseau, la présente invention permet de diagnostiquer plus rapidement les défaillances des connexions et des équipements.
