A method is disclosed for the in vitro growth and proliferation of germ cells obtained from the ovarioles of an insect. By propagating these cells in a medium supplemented with soluble cytokines and mitogenic agents and independent of feeder-cells, they can be induced to proliferate. Cells are stored by cryogenic means for future use.
