A method and apparatus provide for selective encryption between a user and a network ingress/egress point or between a service provider and such an ingress/egress point. Software modules in a peer interface permit selective activation of encryption for particular socket connections. The peer and the ingress/egress point then exchange information such as an encryption key to facilitate the transfer of encrypted information between the peer and that point. Since the network itself is secure, transfers within the network can be performed with decrypted data. However, if information is to be transferred again outside of the network then the data could be encrypted at the egress point.
