ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Enteric coatings are provided on solid pharmaceutical dosage forms by a method which includes the step of covering the dosage forms with an aqueous solution in water-soluable salt form of a polymeric substance having carboxyl groups; the water-soluble salt being selected from alkali metal, ammonium or organic amine salts of the polymeric substance. The coating solution includes substantially no organic solvent, and this method is safe from dangers of air pollution and fire or explosion. The coated dosage form then is brought into contact with a gaseous or diluted inorganic acid selected from the group consisting of hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. The amount of acid is at least equimolar to the carboxyl groups in the polymeric substance contained in the coating layer, such that the polymeric substance is converted into a water-insoluble acid form.
