ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a method of obtaining a purified and concen- trated magnesium chloride-containing brine from a crude brine containing magnesium chloride and also sodium chloride, potassium chloride and magnesium sulphate The method involves a first step of adding carnallite and sodium chloride to the crude brine and decomposing the carnallite, followed by separat- ing crystals of potassium and sodium chloride. In a second step magnesium chloride-containing brine is added and the brine mixture evaporated to cause crystals of kieserite and sodium chloride to form, These crystals are removed and in a third step the brine is cooled to cause carnallite and sodium chloride crystals to form. The carnallite and sodium chloride crystals are separated and added to crude brine in the first step. Some of the purified and concentrated magnesium chloride-containing brine product is recycled to the evaporation step.
