A B S T R A C T Method for purifying pentachlorophenol during its distillation at from 190°C. to 270°C. under reduced pressure characterized by adding to the pentachlorophenol from 0.1 to 10 weight percent of a hydroxyl- or polyhydroxyl- -containing compound selected from sugars, polyhydric alcohols, polyglycols and ethers of polyglycols. The hydroxyl- or polyhydroxyl-containing compound can be added as the anhydrous material or in the form of an aqueous solution containing as little as 10 weight percent of the compound. The process substantially reduces the formation of undesirable by-products during the distillation of the pentachlorophenol.
