The method relates to a rapid identification of wood species by laser induced plasma spectroscopy. The method is used to identify the wood species of a wood sample, such as a lug, a lumber or any other form of wood that is to be identified. The may be carried out by an apparatus comprising a pulsed laser beam which is focused on a wood sample to be analyzed. The laser pulse vaporizes a small volume of the surface of the wood and produces a plasma. The optical emission of the plasma is subsequently collected and sent to an spectrometer positioned to detect the emission lines of the elements present in the samples by a multichannel detector, such as a photodiode array, a CCD, a CID, a CTD or an array of individual detectors. The identification of the wood species is then conducted by comparing the spectral information to typical spectral information of various wood species stored in a database of a computer. The method allow for rapid, virtually non-destructive and on-line identification of various species of wood.
