ABSTRACT Method and device for reading a bar code from the face of an object in which a ray of light is brought from a source of light, preferably a source of laser light, and is deflected in a sector onto a prism in a first plane. A sweep beam of the ray of light is formed and rotated by the prism so that, on departing from the prism the ray of light sweeps in a second plane that has been rotated through about 90° in relation to first plane. The ray of light that sweeps in the second plane is applied to a mirror and via the mirror onto the face of a product that is provided with a bar code.
