The invention relates to a method for detecting symbols and characters on the surface of packages (P), using a usual commercial video camera (VK). The observation field (B1 to Bn) of this camera (VK) is directed over the surface by means of a rotating mirror system (DS), so as to produce a whole image from a number of observation fields (B1 to Bn) which are spread out like tiles.
