ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process for tertiary recovery of oil from underground deposits of average or high salinity. A surfactant which is a carboxymethylated oxyethylene compound of formula R-(OCH2CH2)n-OCH2-COOM in which R is an aliphatic or alkyl-aromatic group, n is a number between 3 and 30 and M is an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium ion is injected in formation water into the deposit. The process is characterized in that the phase inversion temperature of a system composed of a crude oil, formation water and the surfactant is between 0 and 10°C higher than the temperature of the deposit and in that the oxyethylene surfactant is not fully carboxymethylated but has a degree of carboxymethylation between 10 and 90%.
