A B S T R A C T A method for recovering oil, largely free from emulsion, from a sub-terranean deposit having medium or high salinity, by injecting a 1% to 20% solution or dispersion, in formation-water, of carboxy-methylated oxethylate surfactant of the formula: R-(OCH2CH)n-OCH2-COOM wherein R signifies a linear or branched aliphatic residue with 4 to 20 carbon atoms or an alkyl or dialkyl aromatic residue with 1 to 14 carbon atoms, in the alkyl group, n signifies 3 to 30, and M an alkaline or alkaline-earth metal-ion or ammonium, the degree of carboxy-methylation being between 10 and 90%, into an injection-well, the surfactant selected being such that the phase-inversion- temperature of the system comprising crude-oil/formation-water/surfactant/ and possibly-additives lies between 0° and 10°C above the temperature of the deposit. The method permits substantial oil recovery from deposits of high salinity.
