ABSTRACT The present invention relates to cobalt complexes which are capable of reversibly binding with oxygen. The complexes are designated as either [Co(terpy)(bipy)X]n Y or [Co(terpy)(phen)X]n Y, where terpy = terpyridine or substituted terpyridine, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine or substituted bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline or substituted phenanthroline, and X and Y represent specified coordinating anions or coordinating solvents. The subject cobalt complexes reversibly absorb molecular oxygen and can be used in processes for separating oxygen from oxygen-containing gaseous mixtures.
