This patent discloses a method of recycling thermoset elastomers, particularly those used in the manufacture of tires, through the addition of a fatty acid ester compound. The ester compound is obtained by the reaction of an alcohol with a fatty acid obtained from a plant or animal lipid. A preferred form of the invention is to age the elastomeric composition, at a temperature not to exceed the decomposition temperature of the elastomer, in fatty acid ester and to use the solubility of the ester and not the elastomer in an alcohol to remove an excess of fatty acid ester which would compromise the properties of the subsequently formed rubber article.
