60 SD 55 METHOD FOR REDUCING DAMAGE TO DIAMOND CRYSTALS DURING SINTERING ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process inprovement is disclosed for making compacts containing diamond which reduces crystal flaws within the diamond. This is accomplished by isolating the single diamond crystals in a compressible matrix before exposing the sample to sintering conditions. In a preferred method the diamond is embedded in a mixture of graphite and diamond fines. This mixture is disposed between two graphite discs and two cobalt discs. This sub-assembly is contained within zirconium disc and exposed to high pressure-high temperature sintering conditions.
