Operation of a diesel engine (10) with low particulate emissions is achieved. A diesel engine is equipped with a platinum-catalyzed particulate trap (14). The engine (10) is operated with a blend of diesel fuel and a fuel-soluble cerium composition (32) to reduce the balance point of the trap (14) with reduced cerium content. Preferably, the fuel (11) will also contain a fuel-soluble organo-platinum group metal compound (32), or an effective platinum group metal compound can be added to the exhaust or combustion air.

Cette invention se rapporte à un moteur Diesel (10) dont le fonctionnement ne produit que de faibles émissions de particules. Un tel moteur Diesel est équipé d'un piège à particules (14) catalysé par du platine. Ledit moteur (10) fonctionne avec un mélange de carburant pour moteur diesel et d'une composition (32) à base de cérium, soluble dans le carburant, ladite composition servant à réduire le point d'équilibre du piège (14) avec une teneur en cérium réduite. De préférence, le carburant (11) contient également un composé organométallique (32) du groupe du platine, soluble dans le carburant. Il est également possible d'ajouter un composé métallique efficace du groupe du platine aux gaz d'échappement ou à l'air de combustion.
