ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A novel additive is provided which substantially reduces or eliminates the effects of non-specific serum interferences in latex agglutination immunoassay procedures and permits application of such immunoassays to determine the presence or levels of antigens and antibodies of interest, endogenous metabolites, or to monitor the levels of drugs, antibiotics, and other therapeutic agents in serum or plasma samples. The use of the additive maintains the sensitivity and accuracy of the immunoassay, thus eliminating vigorous pre-treatment of the sample and extra manipulative steps. The additive is at least one halogen substituted carboxylic acid or water soluble salt thereof.
