ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Adsorbents comprising partially dried amorphous silica hydrogels having a moisture content of at least about 25 wt% and an average pore diameter of about 60 Angstroms or less are useful in processes for the removal of trace contaminants, specifically phospholipids and associated metal ions, from glyceride oils. Treatment of the partially dried hydrogels with organic acid increases their adsorption capacity for these trace contaminants.
