A process for removing hydrogen sulfide from a natural gas stream. Use is made of heat and pressure to induce spontaneous combustion of sodium sulfide. The latter is formed by contacting the stream with an alkali earth salt and subsequently treating the so formed sodium sulfide with sodium bicarbonate to form sodium sulfate. The sodium sulfate is a useful precursor in further chemical processes.
