A method for removing metal cladding (42, 46, 50) adhered to an airfoil (10), such as a turbine blade (10), wherein the airfoil (10) comprises a substrate (38) and wherein at least a portion of the cladding (42, 46, 50) is adhered to at least one surface (54, 58) of the substrate (38) of the airfoil (10). In this method the cladding (42, 46, 50) is treated with a chemical etchant of the metal that the cladding (42, 46, 50) is made of for a period of time sufficient to remove at least the portion of the cladding (62, 66) adhered to the at least one surface (54, 58) of the substrate (38). The substrate (38) is made of a material that is chemically resistant to the etchant.
