Water containing radium is contacted with a filter medium in which manganese oxide is adhered to surfaces of sand grains or a filter medium made of manganese dioxide .beta.-type crystal grains to selectively adsorb radium on the filter medium. When manganese is contained in water, radium can selectively be adsorbed over a long period of time while contacting water with a filter medium under oxidation conditions to adhere manganese oxide on the surface of the filter medium. Further, when iron is contained in water, it is preferable to previously remove iron by oxidizing iron in water in a pretreatment step.
