A method for removing elemental sulfur from a hot gas stream, such as an autoclave vent gas, while simultaneously cooling the gas stream. The method results in conversion of sulfur in the hot gas stream to the form of solid, non-sticky sulfur allotropes such as rhombic sulfur while avoiding formation of sticky sulfur allotropes such as monoclinic sulfur, thereby avoiding scaling and fouling of plant equipment. According the method, the hot gas stream is contacted with an aqueous medium containing a particulate material inside a quench vessel having a first inlet for the hot gas stream, a second inlet for the aqueous medium, and an outlet for removing a sulfur-containing liquid fraction from the vessel. At least a portion of the sulfur contained in the hot gas stream, along with other condensable materials, becomes incorporated into the aqueous medium and is subsequently drained from the vessel. The aqueous medium may comprise a slurry of tailings or other waste material, and the particulate matter contained in the aqueous medium may provide nucleation sites for the preferential formation of non-sticky solid forms of sulfur.

Linvention concerne un procédé délimination de soufre élémentaire dun courant gazeux chaud, tel quun gaz de ventilation dun autoclave, avec refroidissement simultané du courant gazeux. Le procédé résulte en la conversion du soufre dans le courant gazeux chaud en allotropes de soufre solides et non collants, tels que le soufre rhombique, tout en évitant la formation dallotropes de soufre collants, tels que le soufre monoclinique, ce qui permet déviter lentartrage et lencrassement de léquipement de linstallation. Selon le procédé, le courant gazeux chaud est mis en contact avec un milieu aqueux contenant un matériau particulaire dans une cuve de trempe qui possède une première entrée pour le courant gazeux chaud, une seconde entrée pour le milieu aqueux et une sortie pour éliminer une fraction liquide contenant du soufre de la cuve. Au moins une partie du soufre contenue dans le courant gazeux chaud, accompagnée dautres matériaux condensables, sincorpore dans le milieu aqueux et est ensuite évacuée de la cuve. Le milieu aqueux peut comprendre une pâte de résidus ou dautres déchets, et la matière particulaire contenue dans le milieu aqueux peut fournir des sites de nucléation pour la formation préférentielle de formes solides non collantes de soufre.
