ABSTRACT A precipitation control additive, an acidizing composition for treating a sour well and a method of treating a sour well are provided. A sequestering agent, such as aminopolycarboxylic acids, hydroxycarboxylic acids, cyclic polyethers, and derivatives thereof and a sulfide reactant, such as aldehydes, acetals, hemiacetals, alpha unsaturated ketones, and many other compounds capable of forming aldehydes and alpha unsaturated ketones in solution are added to a treating solution. The sequestering agent combines with a nonferrous metal ion present in the solution while the sulfide reactant combines with sulfides present in the solution. By combining with both the metal and sulfides present in the solution, the combination of a sequestering agent and a sulfide reactant effectively inhibits precipitation of zinc sulfide and lead sulfide. As a result, formation and other serious damage is prevented.
