The invention relates to the use of substituted imidazolium salts for renaturating, for reducing the aggregation and/or for increasing the thermal stability of proteins, to a method for renaturating proteins, for reducing the aggregation and/or for increasing the thermal stability of proteins, and to renaturated proteins produced using the inventive method. According to the inventive method, the proteins to be treated are brought into contact with a liquid renaturation medium that contains substituted imidazolium salts.
