The invention relates to a genetic marker on the 5'-end of the .alpha.S1- casein gene (CSN1S1) and of the casein gene-complex and a method for the age and lactation independent typing of cows by determining the allelic state in said area. The invention also relates to the use of said method for selecting organisms having a preferred allele, for example, in marker-assisted selection.
