ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Sponge packing with an expansion ratio of 1.5 - 5, made from rubber material which is resistant to corrosion by a chlorine and caustic soda solution and which will not deteriorate at elevated temperatures, such as ethylene- propylene rubber or chloroprene rubber, is disposed at a joint between a base plate, comprised of a rubber protector and a conductor, and a frame in a vertical cell for alkali metal chloride electrolysis. The cell utilizes an asbestos diaphragm) and is made up by vertically aligning the base plate, the frame and a head cover one upon another. Good sealing at the joint and protection of any defective parts of the asbestos diaphragm is ensured, and consequently corrosion of the rubber protector, locally about the joint, can be prevented.
