The invention is related to coding mode control in cellular telecommunication systems. In this invention the AMR control is mainly performed centrally, controlled advantageously by RNC and based on the system load or quality measurements such as FER measurements. Advantageously, the UE is nevertheless allowed to change the AMR mode in certain situations.
