The invention concerns a method for a multi-port node having a shared buffer memory to provide enhanced data packet buffering capacity for established virtual circuits (VC's) through the node and one of its output ports while maintaining grades of service commitments. The method admits incoming data packets to a node for an established VC based on a determination of combination of factors including the effective memory requirements for each output port as VC's are created or terminated, the portions of buffer memory in use for conveying packets through the intended output port for the incoming packet, and the total amount of available shared memory in the node. Such determinations enable the node to better decide whether admitting the incoming packet would cause a disproportionate allocation of the shared memory for the intended output port. As a consequence, a relatively high packet buffering capacity can be achieved substantially without violating grades of service commitments.
Méthode conçue pour un noeud multiport à mémoire tampon partagée, permettant d'améliorer la mémoire tampon de paquets de données disponible pour des circuits virtuels (VC) établis par l'intermédiaire du noeud et de l'un de ses ports de sortie, tout en maintenant les niveaux de qualité de service. La méthode admet des paquets de données d'entrée à un noeud pour un VC établi en s'appuyant sur la détermination d'une combinaison de facteurs comprenant : les besoins de mémoire effectifs pour chaque port de sortie lors de la création ou de la suppression des VC, les parties de mémoire tampon utilisées pour la transmission de paquets par l'intermédiaire du port de sortie prévu pour le paquet d'entrée, et la quantité totale de mémoire partagée disponible dans le noeud. Ces déterminations permettent au noeud de mieux déterminer si l'admission du paquet d'arrivée entraînerait une affectation disproportionnée de la mémoire partage au port de sortie prévu. On peut donc obtenir une capacité de tamponnage de paquet relativement élevée essentiellement sans transgresser les niveaux de qualité de service.
